Good in theory, bad in practice August 3, 2007 Danny Chapman (Isle of Wight, England) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This device appears to do everything you'd want from a pocket computer. Unfortunately, it does almost everything badly. Here are some of the most annoying things:
1. It is terribly unresponsive, quite often not responding for seconds after trying to run or interact with a program.
2. Keyboard buffering is rather random, so sometimes your typing gets "forgotten"
3. The screen is reasonably bright, but with the tinted flip-lid down (i.e. when you take it out of your pocket to check something quickly) in sunlight it's unreadable. Making this lid tinted is so stupid (it just means you need to increase the screen brightness which makes the battery life even worse).
4. The mobile version of internet explorer fails to render most non-trivial pages correctly, making it largely useless. Opera mobile works very well, but you have to pay (after a trial), and it uses up valuable memory.
5. The pop3 client only recognises a fraction of my new emails to download - I can't trust it. It also fails to connect sometimes, for no apparant reason.
6. Using the alarm clock totally screws up the notification queue, making alarms go off when they're not set. So - if you set an alarm for 6am one Sunday morning, there's a danger that it will go off EVERY 6am Sunday morning. The only cure is a COMPLETE reset (wiping all installed programs/settings).
7. Active-sync doesn't store settings, so after a reset you need to sort everything out manually.
8. There's quite a lot of bloat in the read-only memory (powerpoint etc) - it would be nice to reclaim some of this for user memory.
9. Battery life is pretty bad (2 days max for my normal use) - FAR less than I'd get out of either a standard mobile phone and/or my old Palm PDA (which would last weeks).
10. 240x240 screen is really quite low resolution
11. I used to use my old Palm PDA as an instrument tuner, and it was spot-on. This thing doesn't seem to know how fast its internal clock is, so the tuner I "bought" (using free credit that comes with the IPAQ) is slightly (but significantly) out of tune.
12. Applications tend to be HUGE - Adobe pdf reader is 7MB for example!!
13. Navigation/interaction is frequently impossible without using the touch-screen (and thus lifting the lid) - very annoying.
14. Whilst the the development libraries needed to write applications for the device are free, they're limited to working only with the full version of MS Visual Studio (very expensive). Not being able to work around the limitations by writing my own software (and sharing it for free) for it is very frustrating.
There are some good things too of course, but you can read about those on the HP website! I bought this as a replacement for my simple mobile and Palm Tungsten T2 (which died after getting soaked). It just about does the job... but I end up cursing it very frequently, and if I lost it I would definitely not buy it again.
Best one from HP June 13, 2007 Alex Zhilinsky (CIS) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I really like this HP. I went through many, many phones and for first time I like everything.
I used to have troubles with it - it was looking up very often. I did put some extra software on it and it starts looking up. I've started taking one at a time... didn't help, still looking up. Problem was simple - Today panel. I took it off and since this day (already 3 months) no look ups at all. Yes, you loosing icons for your battery and memory card... but you can always check it in settings. So, give it a try and you will see.
About GPS. Try web search. I've downloaded free maps for Eastern Europe and all North America. So, you can do same. If you are more like tourist - try OziExplorer. You can get any maps from Google to your PDA and use it for free.
I hope it will help to somebody.
nice one June 3, 2007 P. Vedalankar 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
it is indeed a master piece from hp
ideal for someone who is used to working on windows... only problem I am seeing so far is that it needs very frequent charging... i have forced to charge almost on a daily basis... i just hope the battery life is good
regards

Good Product Shame About The Manual April 19, 2007 Mr. G. D. Rogers (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this product to get an all in one solution for the occasions when I travel. The actual product is great and it does do what it says on the tin though the manual is absolutely dire. Instructions are very very basic and it took me over a week to get this product organised and set up. I also didn`t realise that to make full use of the GPS you have to subscribe to the likes of Tom Tom. The free map I downloaded was poor to say the least, half the locations I entered didn`t come up, I`ll stick to my Street Pilot for Sat Nav !
The plastic belt carrier does not seem to fit the product either. I have tried and tried and I can`t get the product to stay in it !
Having said that: The phone works well, the email works great once set up, wifi and bluetooth work well and activesync keeps everything up to date.
All in all a great product let down by some easily fixed niggles if HP took the time to sort them out.
Mine has gone wrong 3 times in 8 months March 6, 2007 Justin Millner (UK, Bath) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I guess the title says it all, the same problem every time.
Last time HP fixed it they did not have any spares so it was gone for nearly three weeks. I am now trying to get a refund and try a Treo 750 but HP are being extremely unhelpful they seem to think that the problems I have experienced do not qualify it for a refund. Every time it gets repaired you have to reload the self signed certificate etc, it is costing me a fortune in lost hours as it does not handle self signed certificates well.
The PDA is OK, it does lock up quite often and the Tom Tom is very slow.
I would avoid this model.
