Amazon.co.uk Review Some pocket PCs have a standard range of features, some take the minimalist approach, and some pack everything in but the kitchen sink. The Hewlett Packard iPAQ 5450 is in the kitchen sink category, coming with Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless connectivity as well as fingerprint recognition. The former two are not new features, though getting them both in a PDA at the same time is a novelty. If you are a wireless connectivity fan, having both on hand could prove extremely useful. The fingerprint recognition is something altogether more alluring. If you are into data security it may well appeal and design-wise it is neatly integrated into the directional cursor so it is totally unobtrusive. You can use this so-called biometric security measure in conjunction with the Pocket PC password tools or independently of them as you choose. As you might expect from the price and these headline features, the iPAQ 5450 is very well specified. Its Intel Xscale processor runs at 400 MHz and there is 64 MB of memory for your applications and data, an SD card slot for adding more memory, and a superb bright display. The battery is removable and if you use wireless connectivity you may want to invest in a spare cell as this puts quite a drain on power. Hewlett Packard has pulled out all the stops with the iPAQ 5450, which is their best specified, most advanced PDA ever. If you need that wireless connectivity, having it on board instead of added via an expansion card or jacket will be a real boon. --Sandra Vogel

| Customer Reviews: The IPAQ that realy paqs a punch April 28, 2003 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
And I thought that a Psion series seven was the bees knees!. This machine has the lot but most of all it's so easy to use. Straight out of the box and 15minutes charge time later your'e ready to go. Connectivity to an MS pc is faultless as is the download of the free software from the IPAQ web site. I chose the MP3 player (sound fantastic but need a bigger memory card to store the files on) and the Michelin Red Guide. Getting your email to work from the IPAQ requires a bit of decuction seeing as most ISP's aren't too helpful when it comes to mobile connections, but there are plenty of sites that guide you through your particular combination. The screen is the best I have seen and the battery life pretty good. With normal use a couple of days is fine, but get a spare charger to keep at home. In short it's the best palm thingy on the market so get out your cheque book because you know you want one. But be warned dont try or you'll have to buy!
VERY VERY Impressed! April 18, 2003 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have just been given one of these last week for work. I am a mobile engineer and find this now to be a necessity. We have our own application on here but the built in features allow for a extremely secure and reliable access to our call scheduler and also strong protection of data. With the specifications and accessories the way they are, mobile phones may soon go out of use as this functions very well as an alternative, however the bluetooth makes for ease of use with a compatible handset. Large memory capacity and good quality sound also make this a nice multimedia product for on the move. Compared to any other on the market (and i've tried a few) this PDA quite simply wins hands down. I would honestly recommend it to business users but also computer enthusiasts alike as it runs some emulated games very well! This model truly shows the leaps and bounds of which Compaq / The new HP, have progressed and will continue to lead the market for a long time to come.
if you'll use the features, you'll love it March 28, 2003 A. L. Wood (London) 53 out of 54 found this review helpful
THe 5450 has been much maligned for a number of reasons - the main one being that it costs a lot and has features which the average PDA user just doesn't need (wireless LAN, biometric fingerprint-based security). I've had a 5450 for a few weeks now, and it's the favourite of the four PDA's I've owned in recent years. The wireless LAN is fantastic, IF YOU NEED IT! Being in Hong Kong, public wireless access is widespread, and I can now check my email and surf the net from just about any coffee shop in the city, all with a device not much larger than my mobile phone. The finger print scanning is useful - simpler than entering a password - but not a deciding factor for me. The 400mhz processor doesn't run apps much faster than older processors at the moment, due the the way teh software has been written (though this is apparently due to change with an update release coming from Microsoft). This PDA has the best screen of any I've seen - crisper than the Sony clie's, vastly superior to the toshiba pocket pcs - but it's not greatly different from the much cheaper ipaq 3900's. So if you have your heart set on a new ipaq, you should think whether you need the wireless features - if you do, this is the neatest, and possibly cheapest 802.11 option (cheaper than buying a 3900 plus compactflash jacket plus wireless compactflash card) - but if you don't, there's no reason to spend the extra. But if you do use wireless, this little lad will never be out of your hand. As a bonus, personally, I listen to broadband wireless radio from the UK, as if it were a pocket radio - it's the killer app, and the way things are going!
The future is now... March 27, 2003 13 out of 21 found this review helpful
The HP Ipaq H5450 is literally the future today. It has everything that the business professional could possibly need in every day life. The integrated wireless networking makes being stuck at your desk a thing of the past. Let it communicate with your bluetooth enabled mobile phone to access the internet on the move and more. With all the classic applications that you use on an every day basis such as Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, the list goes on. With so many features, this handheld really is the most advanced PDA on the current market.
