| Customer Reviews: Capable-just about, but needs better documentation May 29, 2010 Mr. M. Kostyrka Seems quite good, but you could do with more thorough documentation. None of these bits of software seem to be that logical to use- a bit like having a car with the ignition key under the car (hidden by the exhaust pipe)and the handbrake under the bonnet... or more like having the ignition key on the dash, but a switch that disables its function in two totally different places the location of which takes you a few minutes to fathom out...or not atall... Or like having 99.9% of vegetables under a heading titled 'vegetables'- logical indeed, however the one vegetable you want is under a heading titled 'saucepans'. This is a cheap bit of software and I suspect a lot of hassle could be avoided by purchasing a more pro orientated package that people actually use and complain bitterly about if there's a problem with it and the developers decide they'd better fix it.
Great product if a little tough to learn December 11, 2009 AndyB (West Mids) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
If you just want to make a bit of music and are not too serious then buy a Mac and use the excellent Garageband. For PC users the choice is a bit more daunting and the main brands for the consumer/prosumer market are Steinberg's Cubase and Cakewalk Sonar. The full versions of these products offer fantastic and virtually unlimited possibilities, the cut down versions (of which Home Studio is the Sonar offering) represent great value and creativity for most would be home musicians. In terms of comparative specs think Photoshop Elements compared to the full CS suite, most of the important basic stuff you need is in here with a few decent frills as well.
First off check your hardware - make sure you can exceed the basic recommended spec by some margin. If you have on board sound - forget it - get a proper soundcard (and I am not talking Creative Soundblasters here) take a look at Focusrite, M-Audio or Edirol to name but a few. Plenty of RAM is required and a good processor under the hood is essential. I run this in 64 bit mode under Windows 7 and find it very stable but it is not a true 64 bit app (Cakewalk will probably release one eventually).
Cakewalk have done a huge amount to make this program easy to use and - compared to earlier releases - it is. But don't expect to get great results without putting in a little work. Take your time to work through the tutorials or get one of the excellent books before you dive into the on line help forum (the folks on there are brilliant but they like you to have made a little effort first).
The session drummer and VSTs provided will get you started but depending what else you have access to you may want to supplement these with additional VSTs in time. The LE version of Dimension Pro is a good start but the full version is well worth the investment in my view and EzDrummer also works well with the application. If you want to create mp3s, the encoder Cakewalk provides has to be purchased separately but it is fairly straightforward to install a free encoder such as LAME and use that instead.
There are weaknesses, notation is not the strongest but there are better products out there for that (such as Sibelius) and a decent midi controller makes recording a whole lot easier. Overall, provided you are prepared to put in some investment (in terms of time) and have sufficient computing power, this will give you an incredibly versatile recording facility straight out of the box.
Highly recommended for all aspiring musicians that want to expand their digital recording capability and venture further into the world of digital music.
