2 out of 5 stars Good idea, but needs a lot of improvement.   February 26, 2005
The maps on this are quite detailed, but I was hoping for far more extras regaring Lonely Planet points in particular. I have only tried this map out in London so far, but what I have seen is not really as impressive as what I had hoped for... The biggest let downs are:
- Does not allow you to import an address from our address book. Places have to be laboriously typed in.
- Allows for only one bookmark: frequent typing in of locations.
- NO TUBE OR BUS INFO! What tourist goes around London without using public transport? The least that could have been done is to show the location of the stations. Oddly enough, train stations leading out of London (National Rail) are included (could this be a hint?)
(- this point is just minor: I had hoped the maps would reach out just a little bit further than just Central London.)

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment   October 8, 2004

Not as useful as it might have been. The mapping is very detailed, and as such can replace several city maps. This is a useful function, and the route finding is impressive too. However, the software is badly let down by failure to take advantage of some fairly basic things you find with most computer software nowadays. There is no text completion for address searches etc., so entering routes is laborious. Most disappointingly, you can only enter one bookmark at a time, and you can't save them between sessions, so if you have a number of locations that you might want to navigate between, you have to start over each time. The tourism information on sites, hotels etc, is pretty scant really, not a selling point at all and certainly not a replacement for a guidebook - even a multi-city guidebook would do better.

A shame, as this package could have been a lot more useful very easily, in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Good road map, but no visibility of tube and metro stations   July 11, 2004

The software is great for zooming in and out of views of roads, and it is pretty good at routing as long as you have good address information. But it doesn't deliver what it says on the box - there aren't any details of tube/metro and most other stations, which is incredibly frustrating. You can't create a road route to or from metro stations, you can't use them as a reference point or check how close things are to them, you can't find your hotel and then work out how to get there on public transport. Having used it in London, Brussels and Paris I've found it is completely debilitating. I'm looking for alternatives. I've contacted the makers to check that I've not loaded something wrongly, but had no reply, and checked at a specialist mapping shop and they admit to apparent the gap in functionality and misleading packaging.

This program is so handy I now use it daily. I plan my route, all maps are in superb detail, and look great. I am travelling to London next month, and am looking forward to trying the London City Guide! Hoping for some more destinations....

5 out of 5 stars GPS bug fixed - very good software   September 3, 2003

I had also have that mentioned GPS error. But the company was very responsive to that error and fixed it within hours. They do provide a hotfix and told me that this 'only' does affect cities west of the meridian line (it is really a bug they said ;-)): i.e. Dublin, London and Madrid. Now I have the the fixed version here and it works perfectly!

The software is great and looks beautiful. It is definitively the best mapping software that I ever used on my iPAQ. Very good UI!

As a person who is travelling a lot I am always in search for helpful software for my PocketPC. After testing the software I couldn't believe that this is true: seamless zooming from UK overview to London street level - no flips, no jerks! You have a small tool - a magnifying glass - that allows zooming onto any point in the map by simply move the glass to the point in the map.

The route planner is fine. It's not a sat-nav system but for finding your route in the city it is perfect: open up the context-sensitive-menu, select you start or destination and calculate the route. Again: when I first flew over the route line in the map I couldn't believe it. First you receive a complete list of waypoints, then one can switch to the map view and the program flies over the route like a bird and starts automatically at the first waypoint. Now you can follow the route step by step. As I used my GPS for locate my position I even could check if I do follow the route in the right direction - a kind of 'satellite navigation'.

Very nice for me as a traveler - but I am convinced every local would like this too - are the Lonely Planet highlights. I do not like hundreds of addresses about things I have to see or places I have to visit (this is always a little bit like a menu at a Chinese restaurant - I can never decide what I should order) The selection they are providing is very good and even for business lunchs etc. I have found the right picks in-between.
