4 out of 5 stars Toshiba G900 - a great phone, shame about the flaws.   August 29, 2008

I've owned my Toshiba G900 for a few weeks now, and looking at the other review here and reviews on various websites, it doesn't seem to have got a good response overall. Yet, I would say the phone is vastly underrated. True, it has its flaws, which I will explain, but for the cheap price you can often get it at, the crisp WVGA screen and the wide array of features, you can't go wrong.

This smartphone runs the Windows Mobile 6 operating system which supports a great amount of features and applications. Keep in mind that people who buy this "phone" should also be wanting to buy a PDA. Its PDA functions outweigh its phone functions. Windows Mobile 6 is great, and with the latest Toshiba G900 ROM updates, it works just fine. A problem some G900 users complain about is "SOD" or "Sleep of Death". When this occurs, the device enters a sleep mode after inactivity but cannot recover from it so you have to hard reset your phone.

Fortunately, I haven't had this problem at all. I'm pretty sure that the latest ROM updates have removed the flaw. I think I'll get through most of the flaws first, so another flaw is the "key delay". This flaw can be fixed. If you'd like to play any video games or use emulators on your G900, you will be disappointed to find that there's a noticeable delay (about half a second) from when you press a key until when the game actually responds to this. I won't go into why this happens, but an application called kbdfix has been created to rectify this problem.

Another problem is that some applications or games only run in VGA (640x480) and not 800x480. To solve this, you can run an app called WVGAFIX2 that will change your G900's screen res to 640x480. For your convenience I have uploaded both applications to my server - get them here:

www.outlawstar.co.uk/files/G900/kbdFix_v3.zip
www.outlawstar.co.uk/files/G900/WVGAFIX2_BY_Cotulla.zip

WVGAFIX2 will install and you can run it from your programs. Kbdfix is an exe - create a shortcut to it and copy it to /Windows/Startup/. So, they are my main problems with the G900, but as you can see they can be fixed. If they couldn't, I'd give it three stars instead. It's a shame that Toshiba's customer support isn't always so supportive. It's about time to get onto the good points, so I'll list any other bad points. Celluar and Wi-Fi signal isn't great - take a backup phone with you if you're going to a low-signal area. Also, the G900 actually has GeForce graphics inside, but Toshiba rushed the phone so it doesn't have the drivers, which is a shame because we'd have a much faster device otherwise.

Onto the good points - the 800x480 screen has its real benefits, as does the fast CPU. Let me give you an example. I put a very high-res, widescreen version of the film Cloverfield onto my G900 and played it with CorePlayer. The detail is incredible. The frame rate wasn't perfect, but not bad either. I recommend encoding videos with MPEG4 for best playback. Another good point is that whilst the G900's camera quality isn't the best, it isn't half bad, and it has a frontal camera too - perfect for video calls.

If you constantly surf the G900 and have a wireless router, I'm pleased the say the G900 is definitely for you. Whilst wireless signal is not great, it's been okay for me, and using the Opera browser it comes with, browsing at 800x480 is very easy. I'm very pleased with web browsing on it, and while maybe web browsing isn't quite as smooth (but yet very good) as web browsing on, say, the iPhone, the QWERTY thumb pad is excellent and very responsive, so you'll be able to type at fast speeds whilst your iPhone-using friend is tapping away.

Internal memory isn't great. I think it's 64MB. I got a 2GB MiniSD card though, and haven't had any problems in terms of memory. If you want to go larger though, I've also uploaded a patch which allows you to use MiniSDHC which allows your G900 to support up to 8GB MiniSDHC cards and possibly even higher capacities in the future. Get it here: www.outlawstar.co.uk/files/G900/Toshiba_OEM_SDHC_Driver.zip

All in all, top device. Some flaws, but nothing that ruins it. Sound quality is more than acceptable too. Sorry I went into technical details a bit much - I just think people need to know about these patches. They make a big difference.

This phone was hailed as the answer to everything, a smart phone for the next generation with the new improved high resolution screen. Well I bought one and wished I had not bothered. The unit was slow out of the box, the signal was don compared to other phones using the same sim-card. The USB connection proved to be unreliable and the bluetooth would randomly disconnect. The signal got worse and worse, then the USB socket which is also used for charging stopped working altogether, this is only 2 months down the line!!! So I now have a door stop which I am unable to charge and even if I could it would not be worth it as it gets hardly any signal and is too slow to be of any practical use. Not detered by this I sent the unit to Toshiba's UK repairs service who sent the unit back late (they quote 5 day turnaround) and in an un-repaired state staing liquid ingress, which I can assure everyone was not the case. So basically this was a waste of £400 at the time. Seriously look at the HTC units instead this is a complete dead duck.
